What is special enrollment?
In general, you can only change or apply for health care coverage during the yearly open enrollment period. But if you have a certain type of life event, you can change or apply for coverage right then. This is called a special enrollment period.
Examples of these types of qualifying life events (also called triggering events) include:
- Getting married
- Having a baby
- Losing coverage because lost your job
